Need Something to Plant Around a Mailbox?
When it comes to beautifying your landscaping, they are superior to grass because they don't have to be mowed. Their roles in taming steep hills and in making life hard for weeds only begins to tell the story behind why creeping junipers are so popular. While male and female creeping junipers look the same in terms of foliage and growth habits, they show their difference in their flowers. The male flower is a cone-like structure with yellow-brown scales.

Junipers can be used for anything from groundcovers to tall privacy screens, borders, accent plantings, topiary & bonsai projects - you name it!! And the fact that Junipers adapt to a very wide range of growing conditions make them an attractive option for many customers. They are very drought tolerant, handling rather dry conditions quite easily - and have very few pest related problems to worry about. If you really don't enjoy spending a lot of time maintaining your garden, or you aren't a fan of mowing the lawn, then creeping juniper could be a perfect choice. This hardy, low-growing evergreen shrub can be used as an alternative ground cover, although it doesn't cope well with high footfall.
Alternative Plants to Consider
Best suited for full sun locations - good growth rate. There are plenty of creeping juniper options out there and new ones are always coming onto the market. Many cultivars are fairly similar, varying slightly in color and size, which is excellent because this allows you to find exactly what you want. But the plants you’ll find at nurseries will not typically produce these. I've had some experience with junipers and I can tell you that junipers like sunny conditions on the dry side.

KatherineD - I've always torn out the blue violets that have sprouted in my yard...just seemed they had the potential to be such a nuisance. But now one has entered my yard that has a larger bloom and is more of a pink blossom...it looks like an actual plant rather than a weed with a tiny blossom. I can see how you like them - especially in that picture with the large drift of them.

This photo has been incorporated to illustrate the point that creeping juniper isn't just for steep hills in out-of-the-way places. As you can see, this planting borders a sidewalk, a hop, skip and a jump from the street. Blue Star Juniper has a low growing, rounded, compact growth habit. It has very rich, silvery-blue needles year around.
It takes years and tons of knowledge, and even then you’ll probably struggle with low germination rates. Junipers in general have been cultivated for centuries, with records of cultivated J. It’s not exactly clear when people first started cultivating J. Horizontalis, but it has likely been a long, long time. Fortunately, there are so many junipers out there that you rarely need to worry about pollination, particularly since different species can pollinate each other.

Junipers tend to grow on rocky mountain sides in full sun. Some of the most popular cultivars are outlined below.

Creeping junipers rarely stretch above a foot or so tall, but they make an outsized impact. While every effort has been made to describe these plants accurately, please keep in mind that height, bloom time, and color may differ in various climates. The description of these plants has been written based on numerous outside resources. Creeping juniper quickly becomes huge- those spots aren’t the best for it as you’ll continuously have to clip it. How long have the junipers been in the ground? If well established they might not transplant that well.
Light green base color with bright yellow highlights. Makes a good medium accent or foreground planting. Gold Lace is absolutely stunning with dark forest green foliage trimmed in intense vibrant golden yellow on new foliage in spring thru mid summer.
One of the absolute best suited junipers for use as a groundcover. Juniperus horizontalis 'Wiltonii,' commonly called blue rug juniper, is the most popular of all the creeping juniper cultivars. It grows up to about six inches tall and can spread to around eight feet. Gold Lace is an absolutely stunning juniper with dark forest green foliage with all the new growth trimmed in bright, vibrant golden yellow. This drought-tolerant shrub copes in hot, arid conditions well. When young plants or seedlings are being transplanted into the ground is the only time you'll want to ensure the soil is kept consistently moist.
The new patio will be a cement product...perhaps just laid in a large squares pattern. Such a large area has to have "segments"...don't know what that would be called...joints? Just enough pattern to keep it from cracking but not enough get into realm of "fancy" or expensive. Not sure what the style is now when one is doing contemporary patios. Plants in pots will have to do for time being on new back patio.
